Doctoral Degree Programs

The University of Texas at Tyler

The UT Tyler Ed.D. in School Improvement will provide Texas educators the option to complete an online doctoral program that is a unique opportunity for educators to develop a deep understanding of change theory, foundations of school improvement, and issues of diversity. The program will facilitate the transfer of theoretical constructs and understanding to practice.

The Clinical Psychology PhD, offered on-campus, is a scientist-practitioner based program which provides high quality academic, research, and clinical training with under-served populations.

UT Tyler offers an online PhD in nursing, designed to prepare nurse leaders for careers in education and research. The program includes emphases in health priorities that have applicability nationally and internationally. The nursing PhD program is an entirely online program.

The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program at UT Tyler prepares nurse leaders to address complex issues in a variety of health settings. The program allows nurses to study primarily online in the communities where they live. Occasional on-campus intensives are included.

We also offer a PhD in human resource development. This program is designed to prepare researchers and practitioner leaders for a rapidly changing and culturally diverse global workforce. The HRD PhD meets in an executive format which is five on-site classes, held Friday evenings and Saturdays during the Fall and Spring semesters. Summer classes have four on-site classes per semester, held Saturdays. Students complete the balance of course requirements online.

Become a Pharmacist: Earn Your PharmD at UT Tyler. Students in the Doctor of Pharmacy program learn in a team-based environment taught by some of the most innovative and caring faculty in the world. Experience the excitement of working with nurses, physicians and pharmacists to provide pharmacy care to patients of all ages and engage in the rapidly expanding healthcare field in East Texas. The PharmD program admission criteria differs from the nursing PhD and HRD PhD, so please visit the Ben and Maytee Fisch College of Pharmacy home page for more information.

Doctoral Admissions

Applicants for admission to a PhD program at UT Tyler must hold a baccalaureate and a master's degree from an accredited institution, complete an application for the program, and submit official GRE/GMAT scores and official transcripts showing proof of baccalaureate and a master's. Clinical Psychology Ph.D. applicants may apply with or without a master's degree. UT Tyler transcripts need not be forwarded by the applicant.

In addition to program admission requirements, consideration for admission is also given to one or more of the following: the applicant’s demonstrated commitment to his or her chosen field of study, socioeconomic background, multilingual proficiency, geographic region of residence, first generation of family to graduate from an undergraduate program, and involvement and level of responsibility in other matters including extracurricular activities, employment, community service, or family responsibility of raising children.

Because some programs accept only a limited number of students or do not have the faculty or facilities to accommodate a student's particular area of study, some applicants who exceed minimum requirements may not be accepted.

Executive format and 100% online programs are not open to students on an F-1 visa.

Characteristics of UT Tyler Doctoral Programs

The Characteristics of Doctoral Programs were developed by the Graduate Education Advisory Committee to create a snapshot of all doctoral programs at public universities and health-related institutions. The information is intended to provide information to the institutions for self-improvement and to serve as a guide to members of the general public who are interested in doctoral education, such as prospective students and their families. More information on the definitions of these measures can be found at the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board site.
